Hogwarts Student Display

The idea popped into my head to make a little sweater decoration for my Wizarding World project. That idea just grew into making a whole student display. Once you have the sweater, you need a scarf, then a broom, then a wand, and then it can go on and on!

For this project I used yellows and blacks because my house is Hufflepuff, you can switch out the color for your house to personalize your own! There are a lot of little elements to this project to put together, you don’t have to use all of them and there are always things you can add.

First let’s start with all the elements that go into this display.

Broom:

I got this little set of brooms at Hobby Lobby in the doll house section. I will definitely find a use for them all!

Scarf:

I first cut a strip of black and strip of yellow out of felt. Then I cut up the yellow into what would become the stripes and spaced them out on the black strip. I sewed them on where I wanted. Then I cut the ends to make fringe of the scarf.

Wand:

I choose a mini wand I had made previously, check out how to make your own here.

Sweater:

First, I made a template for the sweater and optional hanger you might want to use. (I ended up not using the hanger in the end.)

I cut out felt in the shape of the template, a back and front. I sewed them together as shown below. Please note that I can’t knit or crochet, so this was my alternative to that method!

Then it was time for the letter. I decided to use puffy fabric paint in the color black, you could stitch the letter on if you wanted, before sewing the back and front of the sweater together.

I was really careful when making the letter and practiced a few times before committing. Once the letter dries completely, the sweater is done!

Hanger:

First, I gathered supplies I would need to bend the hanger into the shape I wanted to fit the sweater. Wire, wire cutters, and needle nose pliers, plus the template to follow.

You just have to play around with bending the wire, it just takes one long piece and you just follow the template as best as you can. As I said, I didn’t end up using mine!

Background:

I took a wood plaque and decided I would paint the border stripes of yellow and black, Hufflepuff pride. Then I would make the middle area white. This is completely up to you and what style you want, the background can be anything you want!

Because I’m going to hang my display I attached a hook into the back.

Cat:

I made a calico cat as they clearly say you can bring a cat, an owl, or a toad. (I debated with myself because I would also love to use an owl but had to go cat!) I started by making a template for my cat. Mine is very small because I didn’t have much room.

First, I cut out the felt elements from the template. Then I used hot glue to put them together in layers. (I missed a picture of the top layer of white!)

For the face I used fabric paint again, as it’s so small I used toothpicks!

Make sure you add the little white light reflection onto the eyes, it’s just a nice touch. Let it dry and then the cat is complete.

Now it’s time to put them all together! There are several ways you can attach the items of your choice to the background. The way I chose was to use E6000 glue. This is permanent, you will not be able to easily take the items off once it dries completely! The placement is important and you should definitely play around with configuration until you really love it.

I used the glue very carefully, like using a toothpick for the wand so that the glue did not glop everywhere. I really love how it came together and how creative you can be with customizing it.

Displays:

There are plenty of other display options. They don’t have to be complicated either.

Individual sweaters can go on a small circle, I painted this one like their house colors. A black background also looks good.

Also if a family or group want to be together you can make a group display, like this one with the sweaters and brooms. Paint options here can be fun too, I chose a border with their house colors and a black background that really make it pop.

Finally, if it's near holiday time and you want to convert it into an ornament, that's completely possible too and looks great! I used a flat blank wood ornament and glued it on to there. Hang it by the house color ribbon and you're done!

Bonus: Owls!

As I was working on another display, I decided to make some owls!

Here are the templates: Owl Templates

These are easy to put together, just like the process for a cat! Pick an owl and then cut out the template in felt or fabric of your choice.

Then, assemble the owl and either sew or glue it together. For pupils and beak I used fabric paint to make my life easier because mine were very small.

When they're all done you can use them however you want!
