Death-Eater Mask

Masks are awesome and make a great addition to any décor, or if you want to wear them of course! Death-eater masks from the Wizarding World are fun to make because they vary a lot so you can make your own design that’s personal to you.

I started with a blank mask (I got a 6 pack for cheap on Amazon) and thought about the design I wanted to do. Bellatrix LeStrange is amazing so I thought I would use her mask as inspiration.

My next step before painting was to cut out the mouth and nose. I made lines where I wanted to cut and carefully used a craft knife to make the cuts. Be careful!

I decided to lay down a light metallic silver, to replicate a metal affect. Then I carefully put the first lines on for my design. I would expand these lines, but I wanted an initial idea of what it might look like. Symetry is hard, mine isn’t perfect, but I’m proud!

I wasn’t quite happy with the size of the eyes, as I bought a blank mask and couldn’t control the shape. Many of the masks also have mouth guard/cage type of applications. So I made templates for the extra pieces that I would glue on with all-purpose paper glue.

Here are my templates for the mouth and lids. Plus optional circles to cover the strap holes on the side:

I carefully glued the pieces into place, very carefully! It took a bit of adjusting but once it dried it was sturdy exactly where I wanted it to be.

I made my initial lines thicker and then added small details with a darker metallic color. I decided I wanted a fairly simple and subtle mask that stands out to me.

With Details:

**Now that you have your mask it's your choice what you do with it.**

You can keep it a mask alone, hang it up or wear it!

I personally wanted to mount mine to a backboard to hang it as a nice display.

So, I got the background ready to mount mask on. I took a canvas panel and wrapped it with a smooth fabric that I found in the remnants section and used E6000 glue to tack the fabric down to the back. I then took a piece of cardboard and pressed it down with glue on top of the back so that it would really hold the fabric down and tight. (When you do this, make sure that when it’s drying that you press it tight and let it dry completely before you mess with it!) I added a hook for hanging with hot glue, the paper mask is very light and so one hook will do to hold it up nicely.

I had some trouble figuring out how to attach the mask to the background but eventually I decided. I took a small amount of glue and put it on the very sides of the mask where it touched the backing. Carefully I centered it and glued it on. I might do it differently if I were to start over, like hanging it somehow so it would be removable but it all worked out and I adore it! The silver on the black really makes it pop and I think it’s an interesting addition to my Wizarding World decorations.
