Cylon Raider Cookies

What is one great way to defeat the Cylons? Eat them! Battlestar Galactica Cylon Raider cookies!

When I came across Kitchen Overlord’s recipe for Cylon Raider Crescent Rolls my mind immediately went to cookies.

I decided to make my favorite kind of cookies, spritz cookies. I chose this kind of cookie for several reasons. They are very easy to mold and keep their shape fairly well in the oven. Plus, they’re almond and my favorite. If you don’t like almond flavor, you can substitute vanilla extract.

Here is the classic recipe from Betty Crocker:

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened

1/2 cup sugar

2 1/4 cup flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 egg

1/4 teaspoon almond extract (or vanilla)

Food coloring!

(For decorating: chocolate frosting and red sprinkles)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400º F.

  2. Cream softened butter and sugar together in a large bowl.

  3. Stir in flour, egg, almond (or vanilla) extract

Now you have your basic spritz cookie dough. The next step is important. Adding in food coloring. Cylons are metal, so the cookies need to be gray. You can get black food coloring and add in a little at a time to make gray. I didn’t have black so I used the primary colors; blue, red, and yellow. For this amount of dough I used approximately 6 drops of each color, but then 2 extra blue to make it more of a cold gray. I say approximately because you have to play around with coloring a little to make a shade you’re personally happy with.

So now that you have your Cylon gray dough, next is the messy part. Spritz cookies are traditionally made with a cookie press, but to make the Cylon shape you have to shape it by hand.

I found the easiest way was to roll out a thin strip, place it in a crescent shape on the cookie sheet then mold it with my fingers to mimic the sharp front and curve of the Cylon raider. Then make a little bullet shape for the head and squish it on top in the center of the crescent. If you take more time you can shape it pretty accurately but when it’s baked it will melt out a little. I really wanted to eat them so I just went with a simplified shape. You can make them any size you prefer, mine were mostly about an inch by inch and a half, but they really varied in size.

Weapons hot! Place your Cylons in the oven, bake for about 6 minutes. You want them to be set but not brown. Every oven is different, so it’s a good idea to watch it very closely because they bake quickly!

Normally you let cookies cool for a while before you place them on your wire wrack, but you can transfer this kind of cookie right away. Be very careful with the transfer to make sure the wings don't crumble off. Remember to let them cool completely (which won’t take long) before you start decorating.

You can frost the entire cookie if you want, but because it’s already gray you don’t have to! To make the eye, I piped a very thin line of chocolate frosting and stuck a red sprinkle horizontally on it. You can do this by putting your frosting in a plastic bag, squishing it to one corner, and then cut the very tip of that corner off. You can use those cinnamon red hot candies as the eye, just stick one on before baking. If you want to use white frosting with red food coloring, that works too.

I’m very happy with how my Cylon Raider cookies came out, the best part of all was eating them!
