I wanted to make more Legends & Lattes inspired crafts. So, in this amazing book by Travis Baldree, a very special baker named Thimble makes cinnamon rolls. The character Cal loves these cinnamon rolls, so I named mine Calamity Cinnamon Rolls. You don’t have to follow this theme if this book isn’t for you, this project still applies if you love these delicious desserts and playing with clay! This project is fairly straightforward and can be great for kids when developing fine motor skills. Optional earring variant at the end!
First you need some polymer oven-bake clay. I picked what was on sale in the Hobby Lobby, but there are a lot of brands that are really good you might want to try. You just need to pick a variety of colors that will make the bread and cinnamon filling to your liking. I also picked up white for the frosting.
These there are all different colors!
Once you have your clay you need to soften it up. I do this by kneading it and shaping it into a ball and rolling it around a lot in my hands until its warmed up and pliable.
Starting with the bread, a light brown color, you need to make a little skinny worm and lay it down. You roll it out gently so it’s flat. I cut it in half right in the middle. Then I did the exact same thing for the cinnamon filling, a darker brown, only making it a bit shorter. Once they are rolled out they should look like this:
Then lay the cinnamon on top of the bread, like this:
Then you carefully roll it up, starting from the wider end. Once it’s rolled you carefully cut it in half. (Now you have two!) You will need to reshape them a tiny bit after this step because the cutting can flatten one side, but this gives you a chance to make them look how you want them to. (Please note: the cutting step is essential for earrings because you need two that match!)
Now you have your first cinnamon roll! Here is my very first one:
Then I made many of these because I wanted options. Some turn out better than others and it’s a learning process. Just play around with the technique to get comfortable and can make them the way you want. (I kept all mine, even the ones that I didn’t like because then I could use them as practice for frosting in a later step.)
Once you have all that you need, it’s time to bake! Follow the directions on the packaging, be careful to not under-bake as clay gets stronger the longer it bakes. It really helps to use an oven thermometer when doing something like this because exact temperatures are good to know. Every oven is different, some run hot and some run colder.
Now you need to let them cool completely before frosting. While they’re cooling, I used liquid clay to make the frosting. Frosting is optional but I think it gives it that extra little something!
I took some white clay and mixed it in with the liquid clay because it’s normally transparent and I wanted to tint it just a little with white.
(During this go around, I wish I had added more white because it bakes much more transparent than I thought it would. So be aware the liquid clay will bake clear and not white how it looks! I also accidentally used sparkly white, unintentional but it wasn’t super noticeable. Oops!)
I took a toothpick and just kind of frosted the little rolls in different patterns, this is totally up to you what you want the result to look like. (It takes a few tries to get the look right, so start with the rolls you like the least or saved for practice!)
Again, the frosting will bake more transparent so the white you see is not the final result in the prebake picture:
Once you frost all of them, bake again according to the directions on the packaging. The result:
(Yes, I bought doll plates just for this!)
Optional earring variant: This is super easy, you just need dangle earring findings and small screw eye pins. (You can also glue them to studs if you make smaller rolls than I did.)
You screw the pin into the top of the cinnamon roll. Sometimes it helps to drill a small hole with a hand drill, if you have one, very carefully.
Once you screw in the pin you can attach it to an earring hook with pliers. You now have your very own handmade cinnamon roll earrings!
